FAQs
Should I tip on the pre-tax or post-tax total?
Pre-tax is the standard convention — tip on the food and drink subtotal before sales tax is added. The difference is small on one meal but it is the technically correct base.
How much should I tip for delivery or takeout?
For restaurant delivery, 15–20% is customary (a few dollars minimum for small orders). For counter takeout where you just pick up a bag, tipping is optional — 10% or a dollar or two is a kind gesture but not expected.
How it works
Enter your bill total and choose a tip percentage. In the US, 15–20% is standard for sit-down restaurants — 15% for adequate service, 18–20% for good service, more for exceptional. The presets make one-tap tipping easy; you can also type any custom percentage.
Example: a $64.50 bill with an 18% tip gives a $11.61 tip and a $76.11 total. Split 3 ways, that is $25.37 each.
Tip on the pre-tax amount, not the total with tax — most etiquette guides agree the tax line is not part of the service. And when splitting, decide upfront whether to split evenly or itemize; this calculator splits the whole bill evenly.
Why Tipping Percentages Keep Creeping Up
The old standard was 10%, then 15%, and now 18–20% is the norm in most US cities — with some prompts suggesting 25–30%. The shift reflects stagnant tipped wages: the federal tipped minimum wage has been $2.13/hour since 1991, so tips are most of a server's income.
Knowing the history helps you tip deliberately rather than guiltily — pick your percentage by service quality and move on.
The Math Trick Servers Hope You Know
To find 20% fast, move the decimal one place left and double it: 20% of $64.50 is $6.45 × 2 = $12.90. For 15%, take 10% and add half again: $6.45 + $3.23 = $9.68. Or just use this calculator and skip the arithmetic entirely.
Rounding the total to a clean number after tipping also makes splitting painless — $76.11 becomes $76 or $77 without anyone caring.
Tipping Around the World
US tipping culture is the outlier. In Japan and South Korea, tipping can offend. In most of Europe, 5–10% or just rounding up is plenty since service is included. In the UK, 10–12.5% is standard when service is not included.
